Repatriation of profits by foreign investors rose 312 percent to $532 million in five months

The State Bank of Pakistan has attributed the increase in repatriation to the relaxation of capital controls that were implemented last year to combat the foreign exchange crisis.

 

Repatriation of profits by foreign investors rose 312 percent to $532 million in five months

Foreign investors repatriated $532 million in profits and dividends from their investments in Pakistan during July-November of the current fiscal year (FY24), the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported on Wednesday.

 

This is a 312% increase from the $129 million repatriated in the same period last fiscal year (FY23).

 

The State Bank attributed the increase in repatriation to the relaxation of capital controls that were implemented last year to deal with the foreign exchange crisis. Pakistan also received a loan from the IMF to increase its foreign exchange reserves.

 

Figures show that repatriation from foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign portfolio investment (FPI) has increased by 377 percent and 58 percent respectively. FDI withdrawals amounted to $491 million, while FPI withdrawals were $41 million.
